For the ancient Romans, the number 12 was a magical number. In many other eras as well, it has come to symbolize order, perfection, and significance: 12 gods, 12 apostles, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 months. It is no coincidence that this number also shapes the history of the Meridiem Trail: the bike route takes you in 12 stages “ad meridiem”—toward the sun.

From Vienna to Villach in the footsteps of the Romans

The Meridiem Trail begins in Vienna, formerly known as Vindobona, and winds its way through numerous ancient Roman towns and settlements all the way to Villach, once known as Santicum. Those who wish to continue on can even follow the ancient Roman road all the way to Aquileia near Grado—once one of the most important cities on the northern Adriatic coast.
